First the four foundationalss of every man’s wardrobe: Solid Charcoal, Solid Navy, Charcoal Pinstripe, Navy Pinstripe. These four classics will cover almost any situation and provide a good mix of tradition and style. From there, expand based on personal preferences and focus on your personal style (i.e., modern colored pinstripe or a sleek sharkskin). For a more subtle look, go for a traditional plaid or classic charcoal herringbone. And plan to add a light linen or cotton suit for the summer months.

I enjoying reading all of your articles, even the ones that are directed mostly towards women. I have a question about the number of suits a man should own article. Is a black suit not one of the basic suits needed?
Thank you for your “Blueprint for Style”
Howard- great question! If you consider a navy or grey suit and picture the various events you might be called upo to attend, you’ll see that they are more versatile than a black suit. Plus a black suit can look like a waiter’s outfit if not done correctly, so the danger of not looking right is much higher than with a navy or grey option!
