- Born Pierre Balmain in St. Jean de Maurienne, Savoie in 1914
- Pierre received his early training from the two greatest designers of the time, Molyneux and Lucien Lelong
- Rue Francois 1er in Paris is where Balmain open his first Haute Couture house in 1945
- Balmain early inspiration is owed to Gertrude Stein and the advent of “New French Style“….image of an active, irrepressible, perfectly groomed, elegant woman with a touch of independence in her nature took root and was embodied in the “Jolie Madame”
- Pierre Balmain died in June 1982
- Mix-n-mingle: Balmain’s earlier collection included bell-shaped skirts and small waists…which later became Christian Dior‘s “New Look” staple
- “Dressmaking is the architecture of movement”
- Trademark: sheath dresses beneath jackets, and simply yet elegant suits with a slender aesthetic
