I have a client who shall remain nameless who is utterly against jumpsuits due to flashbacks from a former boss but I cannot say I blame her. Until last year, I was pro-run-the-other-way when it came to jumpsuits.
Everything has changed after cracking the formula on doing it right. I now own two. One is a zip-through and the other is a button-through front. One is denim and the other is an olive-colored print with a ruched waistline. On any day I wear them, the compliments are widespread but on those same days, I must choose wisely based on the activities of the day and the weather because it can be unforgiving.
Jumpsuits can work for most body types with a few guidelines in place.
- If you have a long torso, size up to avoid bunching the hind parts
- If you’re petite, don’t go to slouchy because it will overwhelm your frame
- A button-through front is the best option to look more professional
- Unbutton the top few buttons, layer in something colorful underneath, or add a wide belt to cinch the waist and top that with a blazer
- Dark denim is always a good, flexible choice but a mixed material like modal/wool or lyocell will give you more wear time
- The default footwear should be sneakers (to keep it casual), booties (to give it some edge), or heels (to elongate the frame and elevate it).
I will leave you with some unknown but wise words from an IG meme, “Everyone compliments the jumpsuit when you wear it out – but when you get to the bathroom, it’s just you and your choices.”
You get me?! But if you wanna dabble in the deep end, this one has all the makings of a wardrobe win!
