Stylish Reading: Bringing Home the Birkin

Bringing Home the Birkin, Michael Tonello A very fun (and informative) read! My poor friend let me borrow this book too….(it hasn’t been returned either – smh). This book can be read in a weekend so it’s perfect for a beach trip or as a flight book. In the process of being entertained, you’ll get a few key nuances on the “how-to” purchase a Birkin, why they are coveted, what they’ll set you back, and how to “skip the line”

Before Wedding Season Kicks Into Full Swing: Wedding Traditions Evaluated

This is the last post in a series (of three) articles about helping men to nail their wedding day and wedding day prep. Today, we’re talking about wedding traditions ~ some are good, some not-so-hot! Which do you favor? I disagree with the “dowry” placement, “cummerbunds” should be moved further left, and “dollar dance” is exactly right! InsideHook kindly plotted the most common wedding traditions…

The Migration of the Negro

Originally unveiled in 1941 by African-American painter Jacob Lawrence, the 60-panel anthology has been shuttled between DC’s Phillips Collection and New York’s MOMA. Well, for the first time in 20 years, it will be reunited at MOMA as the centerpiece of the exhibition, “One-Way Ticket: Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series and Other Visions of the Great Movement North”. It opened April 3rd. Clearly, I’m going to see it! You?

“Summer suits aren’t supposed to last your whole life – wrap your head around the fact that you’ll probably only get three good summers out of one. Also, avoid double-breasted – it’s just adding another layer.” –Michael Bastian, Designer {shared from Details magazine, May 2015}

Ready for the Weekend: Alaia Sandals

I’m feeling these Greek-inspired bronze sandals. I don’t wear shorts but I rock short dresses and full skirts all summer…and these seem like the ideal substitute to flip flops to add polish, finish and chicness. Alaia ~ I’m in heaven….

Jumping Up And Down To Get Ready For A Beach Vacation

My sister and father are ready to choke me but, I’m barely back three weeks from Dubai, Thailand and Vietnam, and already I am planning another getaway. I think the planning part is exciting but also a great way to escape the current soggy weather currently happening in DC… I was tooling around on another blog which happens to be one of my favorites, Le Catch, and I saw this bag (available at Henri Bendel). Immediately loved the colors and

Step Lightly into Spring: After-hours Heels (Part 5/5)

This is clearly my favorite category because I’m a heels-girl but also because we’re talking about the shoes you sport to show your personality or to add that pep in your step. All bets are off here – the only danger is to steer clear of going headlong into summer (nights are still cool); and expect these to run a little more because you’re adding instant POW to your look. A few you could still rock to work but these

“Right as Rain” Quote

“Ninety-nine percent of rainproof products are woven. Typically, that means synthetics that won’t patina like cotton or leather. But as Italian brand called Ten C makes great coats that are actually knits. They’re based on the fabric used for convertible-car covers, which needs to be able to stretch. It allows them to get back that worn-in look I really love while remaining waterproof.” –Chris Gibbs, owner of Union, in L.A. Moral of the story: you need waterproof stuff and you

MANly Monday: Style Quote

Ode to Mahogany – Diana Ross is Queen

Check Elle for their piece, “Why Diana Ross Reigns Supreme” [Elle, p.186] for more mahogany style insights… But Diana Ernestine Earle Ross is one of my favorite style icons because Her glow was natural – she didn’t present a “game face” with all of the makeup, bells and whistles; she kept it looking naturally fabulous Her smile was on 1000 always – showing your pearly whites accounts for why people like you Her fashion was personal & timeless – we

Spring Must Haves: White Jeans

In case you missed the memo, you could have been rocking your white denim months ago but, if you’re sticking to the straight-and-narrow then know that you MUST have a pair to function this spring and summer. My first recommendation is to own two pairs: one for spring/summer and one for fall/winter. The pair we’re shopping for now should be a lightweight material with some stretch and to make it as versatile as possible, keep embellishments like pockets, contrast stitching,

Step Lightly into Spring: Work Pumps (Part 4/5)

You’re not quite sure how to usher in spring during the week so you err on the side of being conservative (and stick with your standard black pumps). NO! It’s spring and after the hard winter, it’s your right to get a little jiggy with it…without a full-on dorothy-and-wizard-of-oz moment. If you’re sticking with the standard pump then, at a minimum, upgrade yourself to a cognac/leather colored pump (with a coordinating handbag) to look like you tried. If you want

MANly Monday: Style Quote

“An unlined wool suit with a fresco weave (which is really open, so when you hold it up to the light, you can see through it) is your best bet. The other nice thing about fresco is that the yarns are twisted really tightly, so it’s super-resilient, doesn’t wrinkle, and travels nicely.” –Antonio Ciongoli, Creative Director, Eidos Napoli {shared from Details magazine, May 2015}

“Sound Good”?

It’s not just for gents but, let’s be honest, most men take their tunes seriously (perhaps a little more so than the ladies)…. Wearing headphones used to be dorky but now it’s cool; and what counts are the headphones enveloping your head. According to Details, the top four pair to own are: Parrot Zik 2.0 ($400) – unrivaled sound! Sol Republic Shadow ($99) – don’t sound any better than regular earbuds… Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay H8 ($499) – if it’s
