Designer of the Week: Anna Sui

The woman behind the pretty florals and controlled colorful vibrance of Christina Ricci, Sofia Coppola and Courtney Love is Anna Sui and here’s what you need to know:

  • Anna was devoted to dressing her dolls and her neighbor’s toy soldiers for her own personal version of the Academy Awards
  • Born August 4, 1964, Sui went to Parsons School of Design after graduating from high school in the “D” (aka Detroit)
  • Instant gratification….in 1980, she presented six original pieces at the Boutique Show and received an immediate order from Macy’s
  • Anna worked out of her home (no overhead…) until 1991 when she did her first runway show and the New York Times proclaimed her style a “pastiche of hip and haute styles”
  • In 1993, Suiwon the prestigious CFDA Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent
  • In 1997, Anna Sui Shoes premiered on her runway for Fall 1997…the shoe collection was comprised of both day and evening styles, and included velvet, silk, patent leather, snake and lizard skin, shearling and suede
  • In 1999, Sui launched her signature fragrance and cosmetic line
  • For Fall 2000, Sui Dreams, the second Anna Sui fragrance launched worldwide
  • In 2009, Sui partnered with Target to produce a Gossip Girl inspired line combining Upper East Side style with a downtown edge
  • In 2010, she featured her collection on the runway finale of the 14th cycle of America’s Next Top Model
  • Trademarks: similar to her first boutique at 113 Greene St, she pairs haute with whimsy.  She does mixtures of textures and colors, femininity, prints and patterned materials, and dresses!!
