I recently happened upon a great short read about the infamous Anna Wintour and thought I’d share some insights about this supposed-to-walk-on-water-woman. Let’s start with the basics: you ask who is Anna Wintour? Anna is the editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine (she’s been doing it for 22 years), and is single-handedly credited with making and breaking the careers of many famous designers. Remember the book and movie The Devil Wears Prada? That was fashioned after none other than….
Her look? The pageboy haircut that beguiles her 60 years
Her roots? A native of Britain
Vogue’s current focus? It has traditionally been high end, but with the current state of the economy, Anna thinks “it’s been about having the right mix- the aspirational along with something much more accessible.” Note that Anna’s first Vogue covered featured a model wearing a $10,000 Lacroix top with $50 jeans.
On being fashionable? “… people learn what works for them over time.”
Hiccups en route to current locale? Anna was fired from Harper’s Bazaar in 1975 and told she “…would never understand the American market.”
The one accessory every young woman needs starting out? “Enthusiasm”
Greatest pet peeve? “I don’t like people who are late.”
Finally, an insight I’m fond of: “While the glamour of the fashion world is wonderful, it’s also a very important business.”

I just read an excellent bio of Diana Vreeland, another Vogue mastermind…and a little more fun-loving than Anna W.
