  • damask: a broad group of fabrics with elaborate woven floral or geometrics designs that are distinguished by contrasting luster and/or color and which are reversible
  • darning: method of reweaving threads by hand to repair a hole in a sock or garment
  • d.b.: slang term for double-breasted
  • decolletage: French noun sometimes used in English to indicate bare shoulders or a low-cut neckline
  • denier: international textile and hosiery system used for numbering silk and manufactured filament yarns - the low numbers represent finer yarns, the higher numbers the heavier yarns
  • denim: sturdy, serviceable fabric woven in the twill weave, traditionally made with indigo-blue or brown lengthwise yarns and white cross-wise yarns
  • designer: person engaged in creating original clothing and accessories in various areas of the fashion industry
  • diamante: adjective that indicates a sparkling effect as that of the reflection of gemstones
  • dirndl: adjective used to describe various styles in which a full skirt or pant is gathered into a waistline
  • dogaline: loose-fitting, straight-cut gown with very wide sleeves - lower edge turned up and fastened to shoulder - revealing sleeve of the undergown
  • dolman: woman's short mantle or full-length wrap that gives the appearance of a cape from the back, but is sleeved in front
  • donegal tweed: medium to heavyweight tweed made in Ireland.  originally handwoven in the country of Donegal and made in plain or twill weave, usually of coarse yarns with a single colored warp and a blend of colors in the filling yarn
  • double dress: two dresses designed to be worn one over the other.  Often the outer dress may be sheer fabric while the under dress is of an opaque fabric
  • drape: the degree to which fabric falls into graceful folds when hung or arranged in different positions
  • drill: durable cotton fabric made in a twill weave and similar to denim
  • durable press (DP): the name given to a special finish that provides garments with shape retention, durable pleats and creases, durably smooth seams, and wrinkle resistance during use and after laundering
  • dust ruffle: ruffle inside of hem of full-length dress or petticoat to protect dress from becoming soiled when walking outdoors
