Book Review: Thrive

I’m part of this book club, From Left to Write and one of the books we reviewed for May was Thrive by Arianna Huffington. The book was prompted by a broken cheekbone and nasty gash over here eye which was caused by passing out from exhaustion. Whoa!

In spring 2009, I missed a flight for work and had a meltdown. As I was sitting in O’Hare airport, I ran my fingers through my hair and came up with a fairly substantial clump….wtf! As if that weren’t enough, I felt a burning sensation which I later found out were shingles brought on by stress. Three weeks later, I had another episode of shingles. That was my wake-up call that I wasn’t on the right path. I took a hard left turn and left my job.

Do you have that moment that you reflect on that changed the momentum and/or direction of your life? Are you in the midst of it now (or can you see it)? Better yet, what is your trigger to know you are well, happy and thriving? Mine are laughter and manicured nails. It may sound weird but if I’m laughing then likely my viewpoint is rosy and manicured hands is my sign that I’m taking “me” time.

Six years later, I am creating a new space, a new mantra for living, and a new baseline for happiness and success. The cost wasn’t too high but the payoff has been priceless. What is your success?

This post was inspired by Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder by Arianna Huffington who encourages everyone to sleep their way to the top. Join From Left to Write on May 1 we discuss Thrive. As a member, I received a copy of the book for review purposes.
