This fall and perhaps for a while to come, there is a return to classic, low-key, elegant, simple pieces thus creating more versatility and wearability in your wardrobe. Most would say this is a result of designers and retailers desire to be more fiscally prudent or chic-onomics; the fabrics that are prevailing are viscose, denim, silk and other natural fibers. As you think about fall shopping, remember: simple is best especially when it comes to pieces that will get lots of airtime or, for ladies, purses as those are some of our bigger ticket items!
Denim is as American as apple pie so, it’s not going anywhere simply evolving. To that end, most designers are ensuring their fall collections include denim and, more specifically, darker denim as it works for everyday but can make its entrance into more formal settings as well (think creative director Raf Simons). You can opt for any brand including Gap, A.P.C., Jil Sander, Joes, Hudson, Polo, Dsquared, etc as the keys are comfort and fit.
- Men: most men like a slightly looser fit which is fine but, the fit needs to be snug enough so they don’t fall below your hipbone; and if you want to make them as close to work-appropriate as possible then stick with trousers that have a higher waist and straight leg
- Women: ladies like a more snug fit and the most universally flattering are straight legs…which happen to be the most versatile as well; similar to the gentlemen, if you are interested in sneaking them into the office, the trouser pant in the darkest/black denim should get you a pass!
Here are a few options that will keep you in the trend game without losing your pants in the process:
- Gap 1969 Jeans: prices range from around $60 to $90 for men and women; they come in all styles from curvy, straight, bootcut, long & lean, and boyfriend for ladies to straight, standard, bootcut, skinny and authentic for men
- Joes Jeans: prices range from $139 to $198 for the ladies and hover around $165 for the men; all styles come in dark washes including the Honey, Provocateur, Starlet and Socialite, and the Brixton, Classic, Rebel and Rocker
- A.P.C. Jeans: APC started making denim and have returned to their comfort zone with these! For the ladies, the 70s Jeans are tons of stretch and are perfect at $155 for those wanting to ensure they have a snug fit even with their curvaceousness; four different types…and across the board, they’re all $155! (these are my hands-down favorites)
- (ladies) Hudson Jeans: they will run you upwards of $250 to 300 but, I have a pair (and I do have hips and a butt) and I always get compliments from the ladies (guys compliments generally don’t count when you’re wearing but-hugging pants!). They don’t have a store in the US so, click on the link to find out where you can scoop a pair
For the ladies, consider proportion so, bootcut are another great alternative if you have a little more height and aren’t as concerned about creating a leaner silhouette || Straight leg jeans will be the easiest to wear with boots and to tuck in for a grungier feel || For men, designers are offering multiple fit options however, don’t be fooled, straight leg is best…plus it should be easier considering you don’t have the ‘hip’ issue to contend with like the ladies!.
