Who’s Wearing the Pants Anyway?!

Before we get a peek at how to rock today’s pantsuits, let’s share a little information about the history of pantsuits:

  • 1933 – Coco Chanel designed a pantsuit
  • 1930s & 1940s – Marlene Dietrich and Katherine Hepburn wore them
  • 1960s – Yves Saint Laurent feminized them
  • 1968 – Nan Kempner walks into La Côte Basque with half of an Yves Saint Laurent suit because the bottom half were pants
  • 1970s – Halston fetishized them
  • 1980s – They were ubiquitous
  • 1990s – Change from the strong shoulders was needed
  • 2000s – Helmut Lang and Jil Sander refined and modernized the pantsuit

Today, knowing how to wear a pantsuit is essential.  Here are our tips for making this resurgent trend work for you:

  1. Plan to tailor your jacket or coat, it can make you look 10 pounds lighter
  2. To soften your pantsuit, pair it with soft, feminine shirt underneath
  3. Wear classic pumps to create a look that is ‘about business’, and especially if you have full-legged trousers
  4. The most versatile and trendy color for the fall is….camel
  5. Make accessories clean and subtle to leave focus on the pantsuit
