Buying Abroad

My standard “personal item” + “carry-on” for ANY trip less than three days!

If you travel internationally, buying abroad can dramatically upgrade your wardrobe without overspending. Some items are simply better made, better priced, or more thoughtfully designed outside the U.S.

When clients travel, I encourage them to shop with a plan and after researching!

Three Things Worth Buying Abroad

  • Leather goods: Shoes, belts, and handbags, especially in Europe, often offer superior craftsmanship
  • Vintage items: Handbags, blazers, scarves
  • Accessories: Scarves, jewelry, eyeglass frames, and small leather goods reflect regional design sensibilities

The advantage of buying abroad is quality. You’re often paying for skill, not branding, and these pieces age better and hold up longer.

What Not to Buy These Abroad

Just as important as knowing what to buy these abroad is knowing what to skip:

  • Trend-driven statement pieces
  • Logo-heavy impulse buys
  • “Vacation version” clothing that doesn’t fit your real life

Travel can distort judgment. Everything feels “special” in a new setting. But once you’re home, integration matters more than memory.

Shop with Integration in Mind

Before you shop, revisit your wardrobe gaps. Shopping abroad works best when it complements an existing strategy, not when it introduces random standouts that don’t integrate. If you’re looking for places, revisit this post where I share the top consignment stores across several European cities.

Travel shopping should feel intentional, not impulsive. When done well, it becomes one of the most satisfying ways to invest in your style—because the pieces don’t just remind you of where you’ve been.

They become part of where you’re going.
