It’s Layering Season!

Did you know there’s a formula that can help you layer properly?! We are officially cold on the East Coast so, no better time than the present to learn how to layer right.

Layering is the smart choice for a few reasons:

  1. Depending on where you’re going and your internal thermometer, it allows you to flex up or down.
  2. Done right, layering keeps you looking a little less like the Michelin tire man.
  3. Layering allows you to make use of your fall items and even a few summer items (tanks as your first layer and even cashmere tees as a second or third layer).

Take a peek at my pictures above: I’m rocking a sleeveless crewneck tee, an oversized white button-down (WBD), a short trench with a lining, and a multicolored scarf. I have color using my scarf, the tee is thin, and along with the WBD, I can manage to stay relatively warm with the ability to peel off something should I get too warm.

You can become an expert layer-er! Here is your layering primer with five points:

  1. Figure out if you run hot or cold. Plan for two layers if you’re hot-blooded and three if you run cold.
  2. Let your first layer be your thinnest and most breathable layer. This is similar to how you dress to do cold-weather sports like skiing.
  3. Let your last layer be your warmest.
  4. Let your outerwear be dictated by the weather (i.e., rainy = trench, light snow = technical vest/fabric, snowstorm = ski jacket or teddy bear coat, sunny and cold = jacket or light coat).
  5. Because we believe in color psychology and know that cold weather can be a bummer, let your outermost layer or your last layer have the most color because dressing should bring you joy!

BONUS: play with colors and prints to level up your look!
