Principles Needed to Create a Capsule Collection

Minimalist wardrobe shot

Here’s the skinny: creating a capsule collection is a great idea but to do it well, you need to understand the purpose and use of a capsule collection. A capsule collection is NOT for everyone!

A capsule collection is NOT:

  • All of your favorite wardrobe items
  • All of the best and most expensive pieces you own or may want to buy
  • Only comprised of bargains and fast fashion
  • Going to look the same for everyone
  • The same for men and women
  • [by itself] going to “create 30 days worth of new looks”
  • A substitution for minimalism or tiny living
  • The ‘end point’ of a great wardrobe but rather the start
  • A collection of 50+ pieces
  • For the faint of heart!

Do not ‘feel indicted‘, ‘a certain kinda way‘, or like you’ve been called out. This is not that. What this is is an opportunity to get clear on what you’re jumping into before you drown in the deep end of capsule collections!

If I’m scaring you, it’s ok…‘don’t be scared!’ But in working with an expert to create a capsule collection, there are some considerations. It’s almost best to think about the creation of a capsule collection as a mindset shift. It’s the beginning of creating a shift in how you think about getting dressed. Frankly, for some, it’s about ACTUALLY thinking about getting dressed and how you want to show up on a consistent basis.

So, there are 12 principles that will be invaluable as you build a capsule collection.

  1. If you’ve done it correctly when viewing your capsule collection, you should always feel like you have something that works for the occasion.
  2. Basics don’t mean cheap.
  3. Learn how to layer.
  4. Fit is King [the most important].
  5. Fabric is Queen. Oftentimes material determines fit.
  6. White shirts are game-changers.

Head to my substack to see the remaining six principles.

So if you’ve made it to the end of this congrats because it means you’re in it to win it, and I’m here to help you win!
