Rachel Roy is one of my favorite designers because her pieces are always feminine and wearable, and they accommodate the woman with a real body. Yes, she’s dressed Gwyneth Paltrow (super thin) but she’s also styled up Kim Kardashian (not a great example for classic style but curvy nonetheless).
She’s also a movie buff ~ and this showed in her fall 2011 collection as it was inspired by the film The Lover (1992- the movie is about a young girl in Vietnam and her gentleman lover. It’s set in summer and she wears innocent dresses, and he wears loose-fitting suits that are sleek and refined. Rachel “…liked the idea of her wearing his clothes.”). The collection featured sleeveless blazers, cropped pants and easy dresses – very well aligned with the concept of balanced masculine-fem.
“I really think fashion shows should tell a story, tell a new point of view, and should be a nice balance of pushing fashion forward and just being wearable. I want this documentary [about the process of her Spring show] to be a vehicle for people to understand.”
One last piece of intel: she loves President Obama…..
Style notes: her designs are for the woman interested in being a woman, and embracing her curves and assets; she creates a of pieces that are flexible for relaxed work to dressy casual; most of her items have a strong element of artistic bohemian; and she has a penchance for using film as her inspiration.
