Divorce can be ugly and this book was meaty but terrific! Now on to my thoughts….wait – I’ve taken to reading mostly in the evenings, almost as a treat to myself and have also taken to doing it with my glasses. There’s a bit of me that thinks this makes it more “old school”…..pulling on my spec and digging in! Although I have a love for Rivet & Sway, these latest specs are compliments of Warby Parker, the bright red Sloan.
As of late, I’ve been looking for “connections” – ya know the way they always show neurons firing across synapses?! I’ve been looking for connections in my relationships with people, my interactions with acquaintances, the books I read, the clothes I wear, the outfits I create for others, and more. The more genuine they are, the more I get out of them (in retrospect). What 3M (Ms. Maria aka “Mia” Meiklejohn) saw in Sophie Diehl to choose her as her divorce attorney even without any prior experience is the something that I as an entrepreneur crave. Maria or Mia went with her gut and it paid off.
Are you in-tune with your gut? Do you listen to your first-mind?
I submit that to be successful at whatever you do, you must trust yourself (aka your gut or your first-mind) – that little voice inside you that says to hesitate when everyone else says charge, or the inkling that tells you this is right when the boss says that is right, or when your gut puts you somewhere you think you shouldn’t be. Over an elderflower martini on a pleasant Saturday in DC, I told my friend, “you are where you’re supposed to be and it’s some wonderful to be able to go back, trace your steps, and see where/how each decision got you here“
This book was my quiet and slightly chatty nod to follow what I believe. It’s gotten me here along with divine intervention so, forward! It’s truly a blessing to see when your gut/first-mind/little voice/divine hand direct you and, without knowing the full “how”, you are where you’re supposed to be.
The Divorce Papers – this book is available on Amazon.com starting tomorrow….a must-read!
This post was inspired by the novel The Divorce Papers by Susan Rieger. Young lawyer Sophie unwillingly takes her first divorce case with an entertaining and volatile client in this novel told mostly through letters and legal missives. Join From Left to Write on March 18 we discuss The Divorce Papers. As a member, I received a copy of the book for review purposes.

I try to listen to my gut – but so many other things are talking too! Kids, busy brain, husband… so many voices – it is hard to keep it all together and focus on the plan, but I’m working on it! Love the glasses!
It takes practice to tune-in (or tune-out noise). Keep practicing!! Thanks for the compliment – Warby Parker has a great selection
It’s taken me a while (and learning the hard way) to trust my gut, but I’m getting better at it.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked back, and wondered with amazement at how things have worked out – despite my feeling sure at the time that I must be making huge mistakes. Yes, sometimes the choices (or instincts) led to discomfort or difficult times, but so many of the joys that followed would never have happened but for the hard times. So, follow the gut, for sure!! The adventure is worth it.
